In terms of finding original holiday gifts I first like to check out stores that carry the work of local artists. In a shopping mall dominated world full of huge chains and conglomerates it makes me incredibly happy to support local vendors or individual craftspeople. I also love introducing the kids to hand made gifts as the most meaningful gifts that I receive from them are, of course, handmade. It is great for children to realize that making things by hand does not have to be a just a kids’ endeavor, but that many businesses are born out of an artist and an idea.
Co-Op 28, pictured here is a new store in Los Feliz, on Vermont that has unique and interesting gifts. I bought a gorgoues silk screened tee shirt there, as they have a wide selection of original women’s clothes. They also sell jewelry, belts, bags and other quirky and pretty items that would make great gifts.

If you want to avoid the traffic and shop on line – the best site for hand made items is Etsy.com. Etsy is an incredible site that connects artisans to consumers. These earrings are sold on Etsy and made by designer, Kelcey Loomer, Kelsey sent me a sample of these Seed & Sky earrings and they are so pretty. Her designs begin as illustrations or painting that is then scaled down and made into a miniature, high quality print. The earrings are lightweight and such a festive addition to any outfit. They come in silver or gold and are so reasonably priced at $25.00. These are a great gift for Mom, sis, or a treat for you!
Another local option is Handmade Galleries in Sherman Oaks. This store is a terrific spot to check out original gifts. They carry the work of over 100 California artists: one of a kind clothes, jewelry, decorative home goods, and other gift items. I like these Kathy Lo Rcoks name necklaces.
Handmade Galleries is located at 14556 Ventura Boulevard Sherman Oaks, CA 91406
