Restaurants are finally catching on to the modern family’s criteria which is, I believe, the following:
If we’re going to go out to dine with the kids, we want to:
1) Feel cool
2) Eat good food
3) Not pay a fortune
4) (perhaps most important) Have a cocktail
In return, we the parental consumers will try not to, but probably will spill, and leave a mess, however, we promise we won’t stay long. If you make something reasonably priced, and moderately healthy that our kids will eat, we will absolutely come back.
Take A Bao on Ventura Boulevard is one restaurant I just learned about that fits the bill completely. You may have passed it many times on Ventura Blvd, yet never actually ventured in. The funky architecture makes it look like a hip place to dine on a date night, but what you may not know, is that is actually a great place to take the kids for a family dinner. The kids and I had a chance to try Take A Boa last week and we had a fantastic meal. The restaurant sports an eclectic Asian menu & vibe. You place your order at a counter and then food is delivered to you, so the atmosphere feels casual, yet it is also sleek and urban.
At Take A Bao, a big effort is made to make your little ones happy. My kids were given little Wikki stix (bendable waxy sticks) to play with while we waited for our food – a small gesture but a huge deal for the kids, and a welcomed change from a few crayons. There is a six-dollar kids menu where the kids can chose a protein, a carb and a veggie, all delivered in an adorable bent box with a juice box as well.
I had a delicious noodle curry dish, and of course I could not resist the basil lemonade vodka cocktail. The kids even tried some fried tofu, and some Asian pot stickers. I also loved the pulled pork Boa (the pasty bun that reminds you of dim sum but stuffed with spicy meat.) Take a Bao is a great night out for the family. I am sure that if you go, it will spice up your week, and relieve you from the never-ending dilemma of finding something new and interesting for the family dinner.
