According to a Family Finds’ survey of 200 Los Angeles women Jewelry, Chocolate and Flowers no longer are important to Moms. Here’s what the Family Finds Survey Found:
“When it comes to Moms’ favorite thing about Valentine’s Day, sex and dinner out were over shadowed by simple alone time with their significant other – preferred by 43% of LA moms. Jewelry, chocolate and flowers no longer reign supreme, with moms in LA and Chicago in the low single digit percentage caring about what were once Valentine’s Day defacto gifts. “
“Alone time with their significant other…”wins. Okay, ladies, really? How about all of the above: alone time with your significant other and some flowers, or chocolates, or a little jewelry might be nice too, then hot steamy honeymoon sex and dinner out! It is so easy for parents of young children to forget to be a couple; a romantic couple that thinks like people who are dating. (Remember dating? Vaguely?) I believe this is a mistake. In fact, I know it is, as I look around, many of the kids I know are getting older and the parents of these kids marriages are imploding due to lack of intimacy. But that’s another blog, for another day. I am not saying that we need expensive gifts, but a gesture, a home made card, a note or a single flower from the garden would be nice, signifying that we have not totally become just roommates who take care of small children. Unless you and yours do romantic things all the time…(be honest now)…seize the day and make a plan.
There is no need to go out on Tuesday night, the actual Valentine’s Day. In fact, I have always found it a bit disconcerting to be in a restaurant on February 14th with a “Valentine’s menu,” surrounded by couples eating heart shaped cake. My husband and I do, however, try to plan something festive during the week of Valentine’s Day, even if we just meet each other for lunch, again it doesn’t have to be The Ivy. The diner is on the corner is fine.
But I have to tell you, I still am quite fond of a small box of excellent chocolates. John Kelly’s in Hollywood are the best in the city. They have extended hours this weekend.
I hope you do have a Happy Valentine’s Day, or at least a happy moment. Maybe it is a Hallmark holiday, but please don’t let it pass without some small gesture. And if your significant other is bound to forget Valentine’s day…print out this blog post, and post it on the fridge.
What do you and yours do for Valentine’s Day? Leave me a comment and let me know.

Hi Lee! My hubby and I had a romantic lunch with table service! I love diners but for V-Day we chose a nice Italian place (not The Ivy). There’s nothing like a glass of prosecco (he enjoyed a hearty red) at lunch! We took our time, caught up on many topics we never manage to get to and really enjoyed eachother’s company. My home made mushroom gnocchi meal was capped off with a REAL capuccino in a proper ceramic cup and saucer and life was good. Now it’s back to grab and go snacks as I run out the door to pack in the errands before pick up. xo
