Point Dume Malibu – A trip to the beach

by leeroseemery on August 2, 2010

There’s nothing more inspiring than a day at the beach. Point Dume is my favorite LA beach spot, as it really feels like an escape from the city. We always park way down at the end close to the beach. Parking is $7.00, which actually seems worth it as the far beach is less crowded. Here are a few beach day tips:

BEACH DAY TIPS:

Sand Toys: You’ve got to have some, at the very least a shovel and a pail. We’ve collected a lot over the years, and I like to keep our sand toys organized in this mesh laundry bag. You can find one at Target, and it is light and the sand just flows through the mesh.

Sunscreen:

I like California Baby. The stick they sell is great for little faces and provides great coverage. My kids hate having sunscreen put on them, but they somehow don’t mind the stick.

Baby Powder:

Putting shoes back on a toddler or small child’s sandy feet can be a challenge. This is a tip I learned from another mom. Use some pure corn starch baby powder to sprinkle on sandy feet. The powder absorbs the moisture, and the sand just sloughs right off. Plus the kids think it’s cool when you sprinkle on the powder.

Beach hats & Protective Sun Suits

The sun is so strong at the beach.  I like Roberta Freymann’s Roller Rabbit line beach hats as they are so big, floppy and so cute. She has a store in the Brentwood Country Mart.

UV suits

The Flap Happy outlet in Santa Monica has a great assortment of rash guards, (at very inexpensive prices!) plus they also carry one piece UV protective swim suits. As even the best sunscreen wears off in the water, I always feel more relaxed knowing the kids are slightly covered up.

Also make sure to bring pleanty of water and a few towels. (Maybe even extra clothes for the kids – mine always decide they want to swim again once I have gotten them out of their wet suits and all dressed. )

Summer is flying by. A day at the beach is a great way to enjoy LA and your family. Who knows? You may have a budding surfer on your hands as I seem to!

novembertime124a2Ah the beauty salon, one of life’s great pleasures. To sit, have someone wash your hair, then contemplate how to make you look more attractive – I find this to be quite a treat. And when a hair cut works, I feel terrific. I should also confess that I have been known to spend an inordinate amount of money on my hair, believing that most times, when it comes to hair cutters, you get what you pay for. Recently, on a friend’s suggestion, after lamenting the rate hikes at my former Beverly Hills salon, I decided to try someplace new: Hive in Silver Lake. Hive’s concept is refreshing: to provide a chic urban neighborhood salon with reasonably priced hair cuts for adults and kids. Hive also serves as an art gallery for emerging artists, plus a gathering place for Wednesday night sangria parties! Wednesday evenings you can go, have a drink, enjoy a terrific and affordable hair cut, and appreciate some innovative art.

I was pleasantly surprised by my experience at Hive. I loved what my stylist, Sal, did with my hair. I found the atmosphere relaxing, and I even brought my daughter in to have her bangs trimmed. You do not have to go to a special kids’ salon with noisy video games and rocking horses for your kids to have a great hair cutting experience. Try Hive next time you or your kids need a haircut. I think you’ll be impressed with Hive, and the value of a great new look. A cut at Hive cost  half the price of my former haircut. Ah, the beauty salon.

Foot Inspiration – foot massage, Sherman Oaks

by leeroseemery on June 11, 2009

reflexology-foot-chart1My friend discovered this place by accident and took me there a few weeks ago. I would have driven right by as it is in a non-descript mini mall. Foot  Inspiration is the best deal in town for a foot massage. You  sit in a giant chair that also reclines and they massage your feet, then arms, neck, shoulders, and back. You are fully clothed, and in a chair the whole time. but it is very relaxing, and it is really almost a full body massage. The place is modern and clean. It is set up kind of like a nail salon with giant chairs. Instrumental music plays, and the lights are dim.  An hour foot massage it is $25.00. Walk-ins are welcome but when word gets out you may want to call for an appointment. If you have an hour, want to decompress, and happen to be in the Valley, stop into Foot Inspiration and let your feet be inspired.

HAMMER Museum – Reading Series

March 5, 2009 Retreat

Here’s a little cultural event series that if you go, the experience might bring you back to another time in your life; a time when you actually attended cultural events regularly instead of children’s birthday parties. I went to hear the poet Mark Strand read from a collection of his new poems a few weeks [...]

February 16, 2009 Retreat

Having an aching back and tight shoulders seems to be a permanent condition of modern motherhood. My youngest is four and still likes to be carried sometimes, and I scoop him instinctively, forgetting how heavy he really is. I also remember the aches and pains of early  motherhood from nursing my babies all day. My [...]

Marley and Me, the movie

January 9, 2009 Retreat

If you haven’t seen it, you should. This movie, although marketed as a silly movie about an ill-behaved dog, is a beautiful and touching film exploring the daily struggles and sacrifices of marriage and parenthood. Jennifer Aniston delivers a touching and heart felt monologue about how in becoming a mother she feels as if she [...]
