Barnsdall Art Park, Hollywood; Art Classes – for kids and adults

proposedsign_web-300x2191The Barnsdall Art Park is one of those hidden treasures in Los Angeles that makes me so happy that I have a blog so I can write about it. The Barnsdall Art Park was named after Aline Barnsdall, an oil heiress and patron of theatre and arts. The Center offers community art classes for adults and kids at extremely reasonable prices. Located in Hollywood, incorporated around Hollyhock House and several other Frank Lloyd Wright Structures, it is a mecca of art and creative discovery.

I have taken a terrific poetry writing class there, a class in metalsmithing, and a jewelry making class. I long to take a painting class there, although I have absolutely no talent in painting. My sister in-law used to make fabulous pottery at Barnsdall. You can study photography, too. There really is something for everyone. The prices are so incredibly reasonable it makes you feel like  you can just try something that has always sparked your curiosity.  (The most expensive one I saw listed was $90.00 total for six weeks.)

Barnsdall Art Park Junior Arts Center also offers some adult/child art classes, or just classes for children after school or on the weekends. It is a brilliant facility and concept and I hope you will check it out.

The one trick is that you have to devote a long morning to the lottery/registration process. The classes do fill up, but if you have several you are interested in, you are likely to find one that suits you. The registration for the kids’ classes is this Saturday, January 9th. You need to get there at 7am to receive an assigned number to stand in the registration  line. (Don’t tell me you’re not up at that hour, you have small children.) But if you have the time this Saturday (or next Saturday the 16th for the adult classes ) taking a class at Barnsdall is such a delicious way to awaken the artist in you, and do something for yourself.  It’s a whole New Year, let it start by indulging your creativity.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Barnsdall. It’s the best deal in town and an amazing community. I used to commute from the west side of town to attend classes . The early registration is FUN. Bring some coffee and the paper and hang out with other groovy people.
