If you haven’t been to the Peterson Automotive Museum in a while you are in for a treat. My son and I were there yesterday and it was a delight to see his face light up when he ran through the exhibits of old cars, new cars, race cars, toy cars and cars from movies. Mach 5 from Speedracer is there along with Herbie the Love Bug. Seeing the progression of cars from the very first Fords through the newest hybrids was fascinating for both of us. There is a motorcycle exhibit too, where you see what looks like a bicycle with an engine, which my son thought was hilarious. Hot Wheels has a special exhibition room where several hundred toy cars displayed, which of course was a highlight for my five year old car buff. (The Hot Wheels room also has a very cool archway that lights up and sounds like a car race when you walk through it – my son loved that.) On the children’s floor there is a racecar, and old car, and a police motorcycle that the kids can climb on and pretend to drive. An open play area houses some terrific picture books about cars, which you can sit and read. In another on the children’s floor, you can explore some hands-on educational exhibits helping kids understand the inner workings of the automobile.
A new Johnny Rockets Restaurant is attached to the ground floor of the museum, so you can go for a burger or a milkshake before or after your visit. All in all, The Peterson Museum is an enlightening and fun outing for all ages.
