Cabrillo Whale Watch

A whale's tale

It’s easy to get stuck in the carpool lane and forget that there is a big ocean right nearby. The next few months are a great time to see some Pacific grey whales migrating off the California Coast. We had great luck one morning when the kids were smaller actually seeing a whale leap through the water. We watched from a distance, but seeing the size, and then the tale of this gorgeous creature was one of the most spectacular family animal sightings ever. The Cabrillo Marine Aquarium is less than an hour’s drive from LA. A whale watch is a great outing for the whole family. Be sure you bring a hat and sunscreen as the sun is twice as strong out on the water. There are many places to eat near the aquarium, but we liked eating a packed picnic on the rocks. Call ahead for groups and times when the boat takes off. There is also a lovely small visitor’s center at aquarium you can explore before and after to learn about a variety of marine life.
