Tip: The Dirty Dozen, fruits and vegetables containing the most pesticides

by Lee Rose Emery

apple4I know that organic food is better for my family.  But it also tends to be more expensive. In this economy where people are looking for ways to save what may be helpful is to look at the following list of the “dirty dozen.” The following foods tend to have far more pesticides than the “cleanest” list below,  buying the organic version whenever possible  is better. With all of the wonderful Farmer’s Markets LA has on the weekends, it is really easy to stock your pantry with the best local fruits and vegetables.

According to the Environmental Working Group, a web resource dedicated to consumer safety, here is the list to be mindful of.

The Dirty Dozen:

Peaches

Apples

Sweet bell peppers

Celery

Nectarines

Strawberries

Cherries

Lettuce

Grapes (imported)

Pears

Spinach

Potatoes

You’ll notice that many of these have skins, thus making them cleaner by design.

Cleanest:

Onions

Avocado

Sweet corn (frozen)

Pineapples

Mango

Asparagus

Kiwi

Bananas

Cabbage

Broccoli

Eggplant
